The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is one of the largest arts festivals in the world! It has been in existence for over 60 years. Between 2nd - 26th of August, the city comes alive with international and local performers and visitors, participating and enjoying the amazing collection of comedy, theatre and music shows. With less than a week to go until the festival begins, we thought we would put together a guide for anyone attending this year and our top tips.
Venues
The festival can be daunting if you’ve never been. With an audience of over 2 million, 5 times the number of residents, and more than 3,000 shows. As well as the scheduled programme, there is a street fair where companies distribute leaflets, present acts and promote tickets. Unfortunately, the festival is not situated in one area but 300 dynamic venues across the capital. They are varied and innovative, with every space utilised ranging from theatres, temporary structures to churches and even public toilets. So, what are the main areas to look out for…
1.The Royal Mile: Some consider this the heart of the festival. A street, that descends from the castle to the Scottish Parliament Building. Filled with a variety of free shows and acts and only a 6-minute walk from Waverley station.
2.Grassmarket: A vibrant and bustling area located behind Edinburgh Castle in the old town. Filled with comedy and live music as well as local bars and restaurants.
3.George Square: On those rare sunny days, many visitors take advantage of the beer gardens and food stalls on offer here. This is also where you will find the famous purple Underbelly, one of the largest venues offering comedy, cabaret, circus and theatre productions.
Tickets and Prices:
One of the main reasons The Fringe is so popular is the fact they operate an open-door policy, hence why there is such a variety of acts. The festival not only appeals to all age groups and audiences but also those on a budget. Tickets can range from anywhere between £5 to £15 depending on the show. Like most festivals, concession or family tickets can be obtained online or from the official box office which you can find on 180 High Street. In addition, the Fringe offers 2 for 1 tickets and there is a virgin money half price hut near the castle where tickets can be purchased for shows performing that day. Transport:
What’s the best way to get there? We would advise taking public transport.
Bus: Most of the venues have a bus stop outside or nearby. A single fare costs around £1.70 but if you’re planning to use it more than once, a day ticket is £4, or a day and night ticket can be bought for £3.50. However, remember to bring the exact fare as no change will be provided. (http://www.lothianbuses.com/our-services/lothian-country)
Tram: Trams are also available in the centre, from the airport to York Place. Stops include Princes Street and St. Andrew’s square, all within walking distance to the main venues. Remember to buy your ticket from the platform machine before boarding. (https://edinburghtrams.com/)
Train: Depending on what area you are in the main stations are Waverly and Haymarket, both accessible on foot. Trains regularly depart from both to destinations across Scotland and England. (https://www.scotrail.co.uk/)
Accommodation:
If you do take public transport, why not stay over in Edinburgh too! We have several properties available that would be a perfect base while exploring the city or enjoying the festival: https://www.cityroomrentals.co.uk/accommodation/edinburgh/
Top tips:
Firstly, don’t drive! If you want the full festival experience like we suggested take advantage of public transport. It will be cheaper and less stressful! Secondly, if you’re unsure of what shows to see, arrive early and head straight to the ticket office or half-price hut to get the best deals before the crowds gather. Or, if you haven’t done so already download the festival app but try to go with the flow and keep an open mind, some shows might surprise you. And lastly, remember the festival is in Scotland where we often experience 2/3 seasons in one day! Prepare for all weather conditions and make sure to wear comfortable shoes! More importantly, enjoy it, we hope everyone that is attending the festival this year has an amazing time and we would love to hear about your experience so make sure to tag us!
