Next week people all around the UK will come together to celebrate the renowned tradition that is Guy Fawkes night or as it’s more commonly known, bonfire night. A great family event where fireworks will be launched filling the sky with a rainbow of colours and man-made bonfires and sparklers will be lit. But why does this visually spectacular tradition exist, and which cities put on the best displays?
The 5th of November marks the anniversary when a potentially fatal plot was uncovered. Back in 1605 a group of men, led by Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The rebellious group were opposed to the new laws set by the King, which they believed were biased towards certain religious groups. They planted barrels of gunpowder under the building with the intention to kill the King and all the members of parliament. However, before the fuse could be lit, Guy was discovered, arrested and later tortured by guards. Flammable figures are now lit every year on this night to symbolise Guy and his failed attempt and remind everyone that treason is forbidden.
Remember, remember the fifth of
November, Gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot!
Displays:
As you can imagine the best displays are mainly in and around London. Have a lookhereto check out what’s on offer this year. Or if you’re north of the border this is where several displays will beheld.Nonetheless, don’t be disheartened if you’re not in the capital or any of the cities listed. Many communities put on their own displays often in the local park or sports field so make sure to ask around.
Top tips:
If you are attending an event this year, we suggest following these tips. Firstly, make sure you book your tickets in advance to ensure entry. Some places may allow you to buy them at the gate or some may even be free. In order to avoid disappointment, it’s best to check before the night of the event. Secondly, take cash rather than a card with you. Guy Fawkes night is not just about bonfires and fireworks but a night of entertainment. There are usually activities or rides for all to enjoy as well as a variety of delicious food and warming drink stalls. All will typically only accept cash. Finally, make sure you dress for the occasion. As you would expect, these are outdoor events and as it’s November in the UK you will certainly feel the chill so wrap up warm! If you’re susceptible to noise you might also want to consider wearing earmuffs or a hat which will of course also add an extra layer of warmth.
Although visually spectacular, fireworks and bonfires can have detrimental effects. We hope those thinking of taking matters into their own hands and creating their own display will proceed with caution. Make sure to leave enough space between the rockets and any spectators. Take care when lighting them and ensure any bonfires are put out properly rather than left to burn out. And for those that have any pets, please don’t forget about your furry friends! Visit the RSPCA to learn how to take care of your animals during this noisy night.
Whatever you decide to do we hope you have a safe and enjoyable night!
