This month marks a year since the UK went into its first national lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, we’ve all had to make changes to our normal daily routine – including the way Universities are operating. Students have had to adjust to online classes and sitting exams remotely, compared to the normal in-person classes and exams on campus. Many students have reported that they are struggling to motivate themselves or concentrate on their assignments while constantly in the same home environment.
Here are a few suggestions to help keep yourself motivated while studying or completing assignments from home:
1. Create a routine
Start the day off by getting dressed like you normally would. While staying in your PJs might seem like the comfiest option, chances are you won’t feel as ready to start working when you’re still in your loungewear. If possible, create a designated study space somewhere in your flat/house that you only use when you are studying or doing work. This will create a routine for you to get into and follow, similarly like you would have when going into university.
2. Concentration apps
If you struggle to stay concentrated on your university work and are constantly distracted by social media and messages coming in, there are plenty of apps to help you out. ‘Forest’ is the top-rated productivity app that allows you to plant a virtual tree when you want to focus. While working, this tree will continue to grow unless you break focus – focus daily and you will be able to grow your own lush forest! There are many other apps available with different motivation methods. Just have a look and figure out which one works best for you!
3. Go for a walk
While gyms might be closed again during this lockdown, it is important to keep exercising! Why not take a study break halfway through the day and go for a walk in your area? Depending on your local restrictions, you might even be able to meet up with a friend for a socially distanced walk. Fresh air is a great way to clear your mind!
4. Virtual study group
If you are still struggling to motivate yourself – why not set up a virtual study group session with some of your friends or course mates? You can motivate each other to get through that assignment and even help each other out if you are struggling with a certain topic. But remember to stay on track and don’t get distracted by all the gossip and small talk!
