The Newcastle castle - It is a medieval fortification in Newcastle. Explore and learn more about the changing face of the Castle through the ages and find out where the story of Newcastle began.
Follow the city walls - The defence walls are still standing in Newcastle. They are 88 metres high. Start at the St James Park and walk along the wall, it’s worth a look.
The Discovery Museum - It's free and you can explore this great attraction and learn about the local history. Great to learn more about your new student home city!
Visit the Victoria Tunnel - It's a place of many stories. Learn about life during World War II, maybe you can also find a ghost? Take the chance to walk underneath Hadrian’s Roman Wall and find out which other landmarks you are walking beneath.
Walk along one of the 7 bridges - Newcastle has a plenty of bridges. One of them, the Tyne Bridge is an iconic feature of Newcastle. The Quayside or the Millennium Bridge also have fascinating architecture. Talking a romantic or scenic walk, enjoy the epic views or even just to feel how a bridge can move!
Searching for some entertainment? - Visit the Gate, it is only ten minutes away from the Northumbria City Campus by foot. It offers a wide variety of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Also, you can find a cinema and a casino there.
The famous landmarks - Take a journey to the Angel of the North.You’ll never feel smaller, if you stand next to this proud 66-foot-tall statue. You don’t like high things? Then visit the gorgeous Whitley Bay and enjoy the amazing view of the sea.
Enjoy free movies - The Tyneside Bar Café offers every Sunday a free classic movie and they have a Cult Film Night every Monday evening. Meet up with your friends, take a seat, order some food and enjoy a free movie.
Visit the hidden outdoor viewing platform of the Baltic - Enjoy an overwhelming panoramic view of Newcastle’s skyline. If you are more interested in arts and culture, you can visit the regularly changing exhibitions with modern and contemporary art. Not enough art for you? Take a break at Jesmond Dene - A perfect place for a picnic or a BBQ on a glorious sunny day. This calm oasis of woodland walks is only short walk from the city centre. You can enjoy a day sunbathing, peace and quiet without spending a penny.
Take a stroll at the Walk of Fame - Follow the footsteps of the Geordie heroes and find out which of the famous stars you know.
Browse a market - Newcastle has variety of markets to visit and explore for free. Dotted around the city you’ll find many markets to browse like the Grainger Market or the Quayside Market. They are filled with lots of local produce to sample and local people to meet and greet you. Enjoy the downtime hours to explore great places with fantastic atmospheres.
